Cycling UK Oxfordshire organises its own rides and we also highlight some rides run by other local groups.

Even if you are not a Cycling UK member, you will be welcome on any ride that is within your capabilities and we will be happy to match you up with suitable rides. In general, you can ride for free on three rides before deciding whether to join Cycling UK.

Offroad Saturday afternoon ride June 2016

Sat 11 June 2016 - 1:30pm

Various start points. See ctc.wantage.org.uk for details

Twice monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the 2nd Saturday afternoons and 4th Sunday mornings.

The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended.

If there is a theme to this ride, it is woody singletrack.  There will be more twists and turns than a Le Carré spy thriller in the woods around Woodcote.  In exchange, there will be a bit less climbing – not none, but a bit less, and the two main climbs are quite close to the start of the ride.  Also there is no major hazards along the route, as long as you watch for fallen trees.  This is a route that has proved popular in previous years with riders of a wide range of abilities – everyone can enjoy swooping through the woods, and the faster riders find the turns come more quickly which keeps the challenge levels up.  We re-group at the end of each section, which doesn’t take long, and no-one gets lost in the woods.

Top tip: don’t wear your darkest sunglasses in the woods!
