Cycling UK Oxfordshire organises its own rides and we also highlight some rides run by other local groups.

Even if you are not a Cycling UK member, you will be welcome on any ride that is within your capabilities and we will be happy to match you up with suitable rides. In general, you can ride for free on three rides before deciding whether to join Cycling UK.

Memorial ride for Helen Beane

Sat 18 October 2014 - 1:30pm

Meet at Radcliffe Square, Oxford

Isis Cyclists cordially invite all cycling companions of Helen Beane to a memorial cycle ride celebrating the many faces of cycling that she was interested in. Please meet at 1:30pm on Saturday October 18th 2014 in Radcliffe Square, Oxford for a gentle potter to tea at Waterperry Gardens (one of Helen’s favourite tea stops).

If you prefer, meet us at Waterperry Gardens. We expect to arrive around 3pm.

If you have cycle club clothing, then please wear it. Otherwise, please wear something bright and cheerful. Decorated or antique bikes are very welcome!  We want to make this a fitting celebration of all things cycling!

There will be a collection for Sobell House Hospice in Oxford who did such a fantastic job of making Helen’s last month or so easier and more comfortable.  (Suggested donation, £5)

Finally…if you think you’ll take part, it would be very helpful if you could add your name to our doodle poll so that we know whether we are expecting 5, 50 or 500 people!!! The poll can be found at: http://doodle.com/phrie9rptn5gyuse

Ride report

This was a wonderful way to remember Helen.  Over 45 cyclists met in Radcliffe Square, and set off in 4 groups led by Natasha, James, Lucy and Ellen, with more riders joining along the way.  We followed a lovely back route skirting the JR, and through Old Headington before crossing the ring road near the Headington roadabout and leaving the city from Barton.  Turning right we  soon reached Stanton St John and picked up, for a few miles, the route of our 2013 Tr-Vets ride, which Helen helped to organise.  At Menmarsh we bore right and after a few miles of autumnal views turned right at the Wormighall cross-roads for Waterperry.

Reaching the garden centre cafe,  numbers had swelled to over 60 and we were joined by members of Helen’s family.   In addition to Isis Cyclists’, riders had come from Oxford City, Wantage and Midweek CTC groups, the Oxford Sustrans group and the Veteran Cycle Club, reflecting Helen’s wide involvement in the Oxfordshire cycling scene. It was great to catch up with long-standing cycling friends.

Following Helen’s usual practice, Ellen’s group headed back to Oxford by the shortest route, through Holton and the A40 cycle path to  Headington.  We went our separate ways in Marston.  Thanks to those who organised the ride and to our 4 leaders on the day.
