Isis Cyclists’ 50-mile Challenge 2015

Sun 6 September 2015 - 9:30am

Start: Outside the Sheldonian Theatre, Broad Street, Oxford

Isis Cyclists, the Oxford-based women’s cycling group will hold its annual 50-mile Challenge Ride on 6th September 2015. Please note that this ride is for women only.

This year’s 50-mile challenge ride will take a pleasant and quiet route to Burford and back.  Our ride leader will be Ellen Lee. Meet outside the Sheldonian Theatre on Broad St, Oxford at 9.15am for a 9:30am departure.

We will leave Oxford via the Botley Rd and Eynsham. Our coffee stop will be at Aston Pottery. After that we will ride through Bampton, Alvescott and Kencot before starting a lovely and gentle ascent towards Burford. We plan to swing round the west of Burford (passing the Cotswold Wildlife Park) and the beautiful villages of Westwell and Holwell, before descending into the town for lunch.

The return journey takes us back along the Windrush Valley, through Swinbrook and Minster Lovell, before returning to Oxford via Delly End, North Leigh and the Hanboroughs. We will probably stop for a drink at The Hand & Shears in Church Hanborough before the final push back to Oxford.

We will also include a couple of short picnic stops along the way to make sure we break up the ride, and have a good chance to refuel and stretch, so please make sure you bring extra food and plenty of drink to keep you going.

For those of you who rode last year’s 50 mile ride, this route is hillier but about 3 miles shorter. Most of the hills are quite gentle, but there is one short and steeper climb out of Swinbrook on the return journey. The pace will be steady and relaxed and there will be plenty of stops, so we expect to return to Oxford around 6pm.

Ride report

Nine riders enjoyed glorious late summer weather and a pleasant ride to Burford.   You can see more photos from the day on the Isis Cyclists photo pages on google plus.
