CTC Oxfordshire Explorer Ride – Wallingford

Sun 1 June 2014 - 10:00am

Wallingford Market Place

The second in our programme of Explorer rides visiting different areas of the county of Oxfordshire.  Today we’ll be starting from Wallingford and heading into the Chilterns for a 30-mile ride at a relaxed pace.
We’ll head out and up Clacks Lane to Cookley Green, a steady climb into the Chilterns. The route then heads South through Nettlebed and on to a refreshment stop at The Herb Farm in Sonning Common. The return leg follows back roads to Woodcote, Goring and then to Wallingford.
The is being led led by Dan and the CTC Wallingford cyclists.  Dan works in the local bike shop, so we will be in good hands!

Ride report

A good turnout of 11 for the 2nd Explorer ride, which was excellently led by Dan Hart from CTC Wallingford. The Herb Garden at Sonning Common proved a most attractive lunch venue.

Reaching Goring on the way back, the lure of Streatley hill proved too great for Steve and Robin. So taking our leave from the others, up we climbed. Making good use of low gears, we conquered it, and then after regaining our breath, continued on in the direction of Wantage via Four Points, Compton and the Isleys. Reaching Farnborough, the thought of a cup of tea enticed us down to the Saddleback café. Sadly, we arrived just after they’d closed the café (@3:30), but we made up for it with large ice creams instead. We agreed it was good preparation for the rigours of next week’s Century ride.
