90th Anniversary – 1* Ride

Sun 21 September 2014 - 1:00pm

15 mile ride from Standlake Village Hall

An easy-paced ride (about 10mph) heading to Ducklington and Aston returning to Standlake Village Hall at about 3pm for the Anniversary Tea.

We will stop frequently, but not have a lunch or major refreshment stop – so please eat lunch before-hand!

Ride report

It was a very warm day for late September, and there were ten of us to enjoy it on this gentle 16 mile ride, from young Ben to, er, young at heart Peter and Eileen. The first section to Stanton Harcourt saw us get into a steady pace and good conversations about cycling exploits past and planned. We continued on the single track towards Witney, but not reaching it – heading off on the track to Ducklington. Then we crossed the main road and headed on the long undulating straight to Aston. It’s the first time I ridden through Aston without stopping for tea, but we did at least pause at the village green. We then continued down through tiny Cote and even tinier Shifford until returning to the B road for a few hundred metres to the ‘Water Sports Centre’. Here we were greeted by a big red ‘Danger’ sign. I’d scouted the route, so I knew that this referred to the deep ponds either side of the track, and we weren’t going near those. So we continued. Brian and Edith however opted for a smoother surface and less undergrowth on the road. We emerged opposite Standlake, recrossed the A415 and made our way gently back to the VIllage Hall.
