Off-road rides 2018 – Sundays in Wantage

Sun, 11 March, 2018

For 2018 we are aiming to appeal to a wider group of riders for our regular off-road rides.

So we have toned them down, and we are basing them closer to Wantage.

The first ride will be the Sunday 15th April ‘Back on your mountain bike’ ride, aimed at people just starting on off-road, or re-starting, or a little bit uncertain about why you might want to do such a crazy thing.

This will be rideable with 1* effort if you don’t mind a bumpy trail.  It will be best on a mountain bike, but a cyclocross bike is ok and if dry a robust hybrid will be fine, even a tourer if the mudguards are not too close.  Call/email Robin if you would like to know more.

We’ll start in Old Mill Hall, Grove, car park with bike set-up and a few tips.  In previous years we found that the right tyre pressure has a surprisingly big effect on confidence when the going gets bumpy.  We’ll then set off on Crab Hill giving a chance to take on some classic off-road challenges such as ruts, climbing, and twisty tracks.  If we’re doing our job right, that’s were it starts to become fun!

The regular rides will be from Wantage Market Place, by King Alfred.  (Free parking at The Beacon on Sundays)

The rides will be 15-20 miles, on quiet local tracks, through the woods, and maybe up to the Ridgeway.  The effort will be equivalent to a mid-range 2* ride.  We won’t take on any difficult terrain, or rush things along.
