Chit Chat December 2016

Thu, 1 December, 2016

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Certainly outside it is, with a big frost on the ground and icy, icy weather. That makes it slippery on the roads, but can actually be good news off-road. The puddles freeze over, so you can ride over them without getting such a big splash of cold water.   Usually the first rider over cracks the ice but gets across dry, the second… Read More »

Chit Chat September 2016

Thu, 1 September, 2016

The start of September is a good time to reflect on a summer of cycling. Also, particularly given the weather, to hope that there will be a few more dry days good for riding before Autumn gets properly entrenched. I’m going to stretch the definition summer a bit, and claim it started in May started, with the excellent Blowingstone Audax and our Annual Century ride as the first big rides… Read More »

Chit Chat June 2016

Wed, 1 June, 2016

CTC Oxfordshire Chit Chat June 2016 I’m writing this on the Wednesday of Bike Week, on a train into Paddington with my Brompton tucked away in the luggage rack. The theme of this year’s Bike Week was (by the time you read this) cycling to work. As most of the readers here are regular cyclists, you have probably considered cycling as a commuting option, and made a balanced decision. For… Read More »

Off-road rides

Fri, 1 April, 2016

We organise off-road rides on Tuesday evenings and at weekends.  These cover bumpy, but not too difficult trails.  They are great with any kind of mountain bike, and occasionally people have ridden cyclocross or hybrid bikes too.   We adjust the route and distance to suit the riders and the weather. Tuesday rides leave Old Mill Hall, Grove at 6:30pm.  These continue all year, including through rain, wind and snow. Weekend rides… Read More »

Chit Chat March 2016

Tue, 1 March, 2016

It’s wonderful to see the days getting a bit longer, a bit of sunshine and even some dryness returning to the country after a long wet winter. (Apologies if we are returned to rain or snow by the time you read this). As I do a lot of off-road riding, so I am particularly sensitive to the rain that leaves the trails soggy, and even worse that chalk-clay clag that… Read More »

Ride Leader Training

Wed, 20 January, 2016

Ian Murray, Steve Swanton and Martin Casey put together a comprehensive training session on leading a successful ride.  The first training session was held at Islip village hall back in March 2015.  Four members attended and judging from the feedback found it interesting and useful. Steve talked on the CTC's official requirements and responsibilities of ride leaders while I spoke on the practical side of organising and leading a ride. The session being divided into… Read More »

Midweek Vineyards ride

Wed, 14 October, 2015

The Oxfordshire Midweek Group organise rides from various starting points around the County. The brief summary below is for one of our more special rides:   5th Aug 2015. This was undoubtedly one of our most enjoyable and successful rides ever.  On a warm sunny day Denise led 23 of us on a tour of some of Oxfordshire’s vineyards.  Starting from The Emporium, Eynsham we went to The Bridewell Vineyard, near Wilcot… Read More »

Chit Chat June 2015

Sat, 19 September, 2015

CTC Oxfordshire Chit Chat June 2015 Last edition I mentioned our new Bicester series of rides, and I’m glad to say that the first two have been a great success.  We had 27 riders in April and 20 in May.  Experienced group riders will understand that this number of cyclists introduces its own challenges.  In both cases we split into two main groups.  The second time, being more prepared we… Read More »
